Ductless Mini Split Installation in a Bay Area Home Is Not a One-Size Job
Homes throughout this region were constructed across seven decades of varying codes, duct standards, and electrical configurations. A 1960s ranch in Willow Glen, a two-story in Almaden, a Peninsula home with an addition that never received proper returns — every one of them calls for a different solution, and the equipment is only one piece of the picture.
San Jose Heating and Cooling has spent 20+ years installing and replacing ductless mini split systems and other cooling solutions across Santa Clara County and the surrounding Bay Area. Before we recommend anything, we evaluate what your home actually requires: square footage and floor plan, the condition of your existing setup, whether your panel can handle the new load, and how much cooling is being lost through an under-insulated attic. That is how a new ductless mini split installation ends up operating quietly and efficiently rather than struggling through its first summer.

Systems We Install and Replace
Central Air Conditioning
For homes with existing ductwork, central air remains the most straightforward way to cool an entire house evenly. We size each system to your home’s specific needs rather than simply matching whatever was previously installed, since older units were frequently oversized and the ductwork may have been modified since the original setup. Proper sizing results in steadier temperatures, quieter performance, and a compressor that is not wearing itself out ahead of schedule.Ductless Mini Split Systems
Ductless mini split installation solves the problems that central air simply cannot address: additions with no duct runs, converted garages, upstairs bedrooms that run ten degrees warmer than the rest of the house, and older homes where adding ductwork would require opening up finished ceilings. Every zone operates on its own control, so you are not cooling an entire home just to fix one uncomfortable room. We install and replace ductless mini split systems as a Mitsubishi authorized dealer, bringing manufacturer-level expertise to every project.Heat Pump Systems
A heat pump functions as an air conditioner capable of running in reverse. In cooling mode it operates just like a standard system, drawing heat out of your living space and moving it outdoors, while in winter it simply reverses direction to provide heat instead. For homeowners replacing both an aging AC and an aging furnace at the same time, that translates to one system covering both seasons, and the Bay Area’s mild winters are nearly ideal conditions for it. If you are weighing a heat pump against a conventional replacement, we will walk you through the differences in efficiency, upfront investment, and how each option performs in your specific home. You can also read more about our heat pump services.Water-Cooled AC Systems
Water-cooled systems reject heat through water rather than outdoor air, which makes them a practical choice where a standard condenser is not feasible or where equipment needs to run hard over extended periods. Most of our water-cooled work involves restaurants, where high kitchen heat loads, rooftop limitations, and long daily operating hours make conventional setups a poor match. If you run a kitchen or a similar space and your cooling cannot keep pace, we will evaluate the site and install a system built for that demand, following manufacturer specifications and local code.Whole House Fans
Not every situation calls for additional cooling tonnage. In neighborhoods that cool down reliably in the evening, a whole house fan can flush hot air out and reduce the number of hours your system runs altogether. When it is the right fit, we will say so — sometimes it is the more cost-effective path to a comfortable home. Our Ductless Mini Split Installation Process
Every installation follows the same sequence, whether it is a direct replacement or a first-time ductless mini split system.
In-Home System Assessment
We measure the home, inspect the existing setup, and evaluate your electrical panel capacity before recommending anything. You receive a clear scope and a firm price, not an estimate range.
Equipment Selection
We are certified across Bryant, Carrier, Mitsubishi, Goodman, and Amana, so every recommendation is based on what suits your home and budget rather than whatever brand happens to be on hand.
Removal and Prep
The old equipment is disconnected and removed from the property. If duct sealing, insulation work, or a panel upgrade is part of the job, that happens before the new system goes in.
Installation to Spec and Code
Refrigerant lines, condensate drainage, electrical connections, and airflow are all installed to manufacturer specification and California code, then properly commissioned.
Testing and Walkthrough
We verify the system across its full operating range, configure your thermostat, and make sure you understand how everything functions before we leave.
If you are uncertain which side of the line you fall on, we will give you an honest answer. Many of the systems we inspect still have years of useful life remaining, and we would rather tell you that than sell you equipment you do not need. If your system can be repaired, see our air conditioning repair and maintenance services.
Repair or Replace? How to Tell
A cooling system rarely fails without sending signals first. These are the signs that putting more money into repairs has stopped making sense.
- The system is 12 to 15 years old. Beyond that range, efficiency has generally declined enough that a ductless mini split replacement starts paying part of its own way back through reduced energy bills.
- Repairs are becoming a pattern. One repair is normal maintenance. Two or three within a couple of seasons is the system showing you where it is headed, and those costs add up quickly against the price of a new installation.
- Bills rise while usage stays the same. A struggling system draws more power to deliver less cooling. If your habits have not changed but your bill has, the equipment is the variable.
- Rooms are never comfortable. Hot spots and uneven cooling typically trace back to sizing, airflow, or duct problems, issues that survive a repair and persist until they are properly resolved.
- It still runs on R-22. Refrigerant for older systems is increasingly scarce and expensive. A significant leak on an R-22 unit is often the point where replacement becomes the more affordable option.
- New noises or smells at startup.Grinding, banging, or a burnt odor needs a technician to assess it, and sometimes the diagnosis points to end of life.
What Sets Our Ductless Mini Split Installations Apart
Line Sets and Insulation Handled by the Same Team
A repaired ductless mini split connected to poorly insulated refrigerant lines or an under-insulated space will not perform the way it should. San Jose Heating and Cooling handles line set and attic insulation in house, so related issues get addressed in a single project rather than across multiple contractors and separate scheduling.
Electrical Work Covered Under Our License
Larger systems can sometimes require a main panel upgrade to handle the added load. Our California license covers that electrical work, so a panel that is not ready does not hold up your installation while you wait on an outside electrician.
Certified Across Five Major Brands
San Jose Heating and Cooling is Diamond Certified, a Bryant dealer, and certified with Carrier, Mitsubishi, Goodman, and Amana. Our technicians receive manufacturer training on the equipment they install and stay current as technology evolves.
Licensed and Insured in California
Fully licensed in California (#1060833) with standard liability and workers’ compensation coverage, so qualified, accountable professionals are working in your home throughout the project.
Warranty Coverage on Every Install
Most equipment we install carries manufacturer warranties of up to 10 years, and our own workmanship is backed by a 1-year labor warranty. If anything comes up after we leave, you call us and we make it right.
Financing Your New Ductless Mini Split System
A ductless mini split installation is a meaningful investment, and it is rarely one you planned for in advance. When you receive your invoice, you will have the option to apply for financing right then and there, so an upgrade you need can be spread out over time rather than paid all at once.

How long does a ductless mini split installation or replacement take?
Most systems are fully operational within one to two days. Larger homes that also require ductwork or insulation improvements may take three to four days to complete.
How do you determine what size system my home needs?
We measure the home and factor in square footage, layout, existing ductwork condition, and insulation levels rather than simply replicating the tonnage of your previous unit. Oversized systems short cycle, cool unevenly, and wear out ahead of schedule, which is why the assessment always comes before the recommendation.
Do you offer financing for a new ductless mini split installation?
Yes. When you receive your invoice, you can apply for financing right then and there, so a necessary upgrade fits comfortably within your budget.
What warranty comes with a new installation?
Most equipment carries manufacturer warranties of up to 10 years, and our own labor is covered by a 1-year workmanship warranty.
Do you install all AC brands?
We are certified with Bryant, Carrier, Mitsubishi, Goodman, and Amana, and we service all major brands. When it comes time to replace, we help you identify the right fit for your home and budget.
Can you install a system in a home with no existing ductwork?
Yes. Ductless mini split installation delivers targeted cooling room by room without the need to add any ductwork, making it an excellent fit for older homes, additions, converted garages, and similar spaces.
Should I replace my current system with a heat pump?
It depends on the age of your furnace. A heat pump cools exactly like an air conditioner and also handles heating, so if both systems are nearing the end of their service life, replacing them with a single heat pump is often the smarter long-term investment. If your furnace still has plenty of life left, a straightforward mini split or AC replacement usually makes more sense. We will cover both options during the assessment.
Will my electrical panel need to be upgraded?
Possibly, particularly in older homes. We evaluate panel capacity during the initial assessment, and because our license covers electrical work, we can complete any necessary upgrade as part of the same project.
Do you offer emergency service?
Yes. San Jose Heating and Cooling provides 24/7 emergency service along with same-day appointments throughout the Bay Area.
Do you serve my area?
Most likely. We cover all of Santa Clara County, reach across the San Mateo Peninsula, and serve portions of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, including up to Vallejo. Reach out and we will confirm your location.
