Years of experience
Heat Pump Installation in a Bay Area Home Is Not a One-Size Job
Homes here were built across seventy years of varying codes, duct standards, and electrical panels. A 1960s ranch in Willow Glen, a two-story in Almaden, a Peninsula home with an addition that never received proper returns, each one calls for a different solution, and the equipment is only part of the answer.
San Jose Heating and Cooling has spent 20+ years installing and replacing heat pump systems across Santa Clara County and the surrounding Bay Area. Before we recommend any system, we evaluate what your home genuinely requires: square footage and layout, the condition of your existing ductwork, whether your electrical panel can support the new load, and how much efficiency you are losing through a poorly insulated attic. That is how a new heat pump installation ends up running quietly and efficiently instead of struggling through its first winter or summer.

Systems We Install and Replace
Central Air Conditioning
For homes with existing ductwork, central air remains one of the most reliable ways to cool an entire house evenly. We size every system to your specific home rather than simply matching what was there before, since older units were frequently oversized and ductwork conditions may have shifted since the original install. Accurate sizing produces steadier temperatures, quieter performance, and a compressor that is not wearing itself out prematurely.Ductless Mini-Split Systems
Mini-splits address the challenges that central air cannot: additions with no duct runs, converted garages, upstairs bedrooms that run ten degrees warmer than the rest of the house, and older homes where adding ductwork would require opening up finished ceilings. Every zone operates independently, so you are not conditioning the entire home just to fix one problem room. As a Mitsubishi authorized dealer, we install and replace ductless systems to manufacturer standards.Heat Pump Systems
A heat pump is a system that provides both heating and cooling from a single unit. In cooling mode, it operates just like a conventional air conditioner, drawing heat out of the home and releasing it outside. In heating mode, it simply reverses that process. For homeowners replacing an aging air conditioner and an aging furnace at the same time, heat pump installation means one system covering both seasons, and the Bay Area’s mild winters are nearly ideal conditions for it. If you are comparing a heat pump replacement against a traditional AC, we will walk through the efficiency differences, upfront costs, and how each option performs in your specific home. Reach out to learn more about our heat pump installation and replacement services.Water-Cooled AC Systems
Water-cooled systems reject heat through water rather than outdoor air, making them a practical choice where a standard outdoor condenser is not feasible or where equipment must operate for extended hours each day. Most of the water-cooled work we handle is for restaurants, where kitchen heat loads, rooftop limitations, and long daily run times make conventional setups a poor match. If you are operating a commercial kitchen or a similar space and your cooling cannot keep pace, we will evaluate the site and install a system built for that demand, to manufacturer specification and California code.Whole House Fans
Not every situation requires additional tonnage. In neighborhoods that cool down reliably in the evening, a whole house fan can exhaust hot air and reduce the number of hours your heat pump or AC runs at all. When it is the right fit, we will tell you — sometimes it is the more affordable path to a comfortable home. Our Heat Pump Installation Process
Every installation follows the same sequence, whether it is a direct replacement or a first-time heat pump system.
In-Home Assessment
We measure the home, inspect existing ductwork and equipment, and evaluate your electrical panel capacity before making any recommendation. You receive a clear scope and a firm price, not an estimate range.
Equipment Selection
We are certified across Bryant, Carrier, Mitsubishi, Goodman, and Amana, so every recommendation is based on what genuinely fits your home and budget rather than whatever brand we happen to have in stock.
Removal and Preparation
The old equipment is disconnected and removed from the property. If duct sealing, attic insulation, or a panel upgrade is part of the scope, that work is completed before the new heat pump goes in.
Installation to Spec and Code
Refrigerant lines, condensate drainage, electrical connections, and airflow are all installed to manufacturer specification and California code, then properly commissioned before we consider the job done.
Testing and Walkthrough
We verify the system across its full operating range, configure your thermostat, and walk you through how everything runs before we leave.
If you are uncertain which side of that line you fall on, we will give you an honest answer. Many systems we evaluate still have useful years remaining, and we would rather tell you that than recommend a replacement you do not need. If your system is repairable, see our air conditioning repair and maintenance services.
Repair or Replace? How to Tell
A heat pump or air conditioner rarely fails without warning. These are the signs that spending more on repairs has stopped making financial sense.
- The system is 12 to 15 years old. Beyond that range, efficiency has typically declined enough that a heat pump replacement can partially offset its own cost through reduced energy bills.
- Repairs are becoming a pattern. A single repair is normal maintenance. Two or three within a couple of seasons is the system signaling where it is headed, and those costs accumulate against the price of a new unit.
- Bills increase while usage stays the same. A system under strain draws more power to deliver less comfort. If your habits have not changed but your bill has, the equipment is the variable.
- Rooms never reach a comfortable temperature. Hot spots and uneven conditioning typically trace back to sizing, airflow, or duct issues that survive any repair and persist until they are properly resolved.
- It still runs on R-22.Refrigerant for older systems is scarce and costly. A significant leak on an R-22 unit is often the point at which replacement becomes the more economical choice.
- New noises or odors at startup.Grinding, banging, or a burnt smell requires a technician's assessment, and in some cases the diagnosis is end of service life.
What Sets Our Heat Pump Installations Apart
Ductwork and Insulation Handled by the Same Team
A new high-efficiency heat pump connected to leaking ducts and an uninsulated attic will never perform the way it should. San Jose Heating and Cooling handles ductwork and attic insulation in-house, so every part of the system is addressed within a single project rather than being divided among three contractors and three separate schedules.
Electrical Work Covered Under Our License
Heat pump installations sometimes require a main panel upgrade to support the additional load. Our California license covers that electrical work, so an underpowered panel does not put your project on hold while you wait on an outside electrician.Certified Across Five Major Brands
San Jose Heating and Cooling is Diamond Certified, a Bryant dealer, and certified with Carrier, Mitsubishi, Goodman, and Amana. Our technicians receive direct manufacturer training on the equipment they install and stay current as that equipment evolves.
Licensed and Insured in California
Fully licensed in California (#1060833) with standard liability and workers’ compensation coverage, so qualified, accountable professionals are working in your home at every stage of the project.
Warranty Coverage on Every Install
Most equipment we install carries manufacturer warranties of up to 10 years, and our own workmanship is backed by a 1-year labor warranty. If anything comes up after we leave, you contact us and we take care of it.Financing Your New Heat Pump System
A heat pump installation is a meaningful investment, and it is rarely one you planned for in advance. When you receive your invoice, you will have the option to apply for financing on the spot, so an upgrade your home needs can be spread across manageable payments rather than paid all at once.

How long does a heat pump installation or replacement take?
Most systems are fully operational within one to two days. Larger homes that also require ductwork repairs or attic insulation may take three to four days to complete.
How do you determine what size heat pump my home needs?
We measure the home and factor in square footage, layout, ductwork condition, and insulation levels rather than simply duplicating the capacity of your previous unit. Oversized systems short cycle, heat and cool unevenly, and wear out ahead of schedule, which is why the assessment always comes before the equipment recommendation.
Do you offer financing for heat pump installation?
Yes. When you receive your invoice, you can apply for financing right then and there, so a necessary upgrade fits within your budget.
What warranty comes with a new heat pump installation?
Most equipment carries manufacturer warranties of up to 10 years, and our own workmanship is covered by a 1-year labor warranty.
Do you install all heat pump brands?
We are certified with Bryant, Carrier, Mitsubishi, Goodman, and Amana, and we service all major brands. When it is time for a replacement, we help you identify the right fit for your home and budget.
Can you install a heat pump in a home with no ductwork?
Yes. A ductless mini-split heat pump delivers both heating and cooling room by room without requiring new duct runs, making it an excellent option for older homes, room additions, and converted spaces.
Should I replace my AC with a heat pump?
It depends largely on the age of your furnace. A heat pump handles cooling exactly like a standard air conditioner and also provides heating, so if both systems are approaching end of life, a heat pump installation often makes better long-term sense than replacing them separately. If your furnace still has years of useful life remaining, a straightforward AC replacement may be the more practical choice. We will go through both scenarios with you during the assessment.
Will my electrical panel need to be upgraded for a heat pump?
Possibly, particularly in older homes. We evaluate panel capacity during the in-home assessment, and because our license covers electrical work, we can complete any necessary upgrade as part of the same project.
Do you offer emergency service?
Yes. San Jose Heating and Cooling offers 24/7 emergency service along with same-day appointments throughout the Bay Area.
Do you serve my area?
Most likely. We cover all of Santa Clara County, extend into the San Mateo Peninsula, and serve parts of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, including up to Vallejo. Reach out and we will confirm your location.
